Analgesics
General pain relievers that are made for general kinds of pain like backaches or sore muscles.
Aura
A warning signal of migraine experienced by about only 20% of sufferers. Aura may be a visual (eg, seeing flashing lights or zig-zag lines), auditory, or other sensory or physical disturbance. Aura precedes the actual headache, which usually occurs within 60 minutes after the aura ends.
Dilation
A condition in which a body cavity, tube, artery, pupil of the eye, or opening is enlarged or stretched as a result of a normal physiological process or because of disease or a medical procedure.
Onset
The first noticeable symptoms leading to a migraine. For most, headache pain is the first sign.
Prodromes
Warning signals of migraine that can occur well in advance (hours or days) of the onset of symptoms.
Serotonin
A substance that occurs naturally in the body. It has been found that the serotonin level in a migraine sufferer's brain first rises then falls dramatically at the onset of an attack, provoking a theory that serotonin plays an important role in migraine.
Trigger
A specific event or substance that directly leads to a migraine in some patients. Common triggers include, but are not limited to, food, activity, light, sounds, smells, caffeine, nicotine, certain medications, and changes in diet.
